ERIC SLOANE, N.A. (1905-1985) An American Realist
"When a man has lost sight of his past, he loses his ability to look forward intelligently."
Eric Sloane left us a legacy to remind us of an almost vanished America. His intense desire was to provide the public with vital aspects of our communal past.
Mr. Sloane began his artistic career inauspiciously, as an itinerant sign painter, traveling across our vast country, and it was certainly that first meandering journey that forever stirred his longing for early Americana. Also, his burning curiosity allowed his to pursue many facets of his immense talent.
His early path crossed with many of the aviation pioneers, and started his lifelong fascination with meteorology. Wiley Post took him flying, and allowed him to see the sky and land from a vantage that would fuel his imagination for the rest of his life. His need to impart his knowledge also started him on a long and prolific writing career that would result in over forty published books. It was just one more opportunity to share his vision of our country.
Eric Sloane became obsessed in preserving the implements and crafts of our forefathers, and so be erected a museum to house all of these treasures. He built the "Hall of Atmosphere" at the American Museum, and he provided the seven-story block-long mural as the centerpiece of the Washington Air and Space Museum.
The brightest jewels in the crown of his talents, were the abilities to convey with his paintings and his writing, the images of our America. He lamented that it was a long that was threatened with losing its natural heritage. His charming and nostalgic vision will allow future generations to appreciate our history.
Green River Galleries is proud to present a retrospective exhibition of one of our century's foremost realists. Let us hope that his vision will help us develop ours. It is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of history.
The Green River Gallery is located 6 1/2 miles North of Intersections Rt. 44 & 361 in Millerton, NY, on Boston Corners Rd. Gallery hours are Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-5, or by appt. For further information please call 518-789-3311.
