About Canterbury School

Founded in 1915 and still guided by lay Roman Catholics, Canterbury is a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. The School prides itself on creating a community based on its Five Values – Honesty, Respect, Compassion, Spirituality, and Self Reliance – where students and faculty forge lasting bonds and every student experiences a broad and challenging program in a small school setting. The School’s educational environment fosters academic rigor, athletic development, artistic enrichment, and spiritual growth and strives to ensure a superior experience that prepares students for leading colleges and universities and for life.

With its rigorous and humane approach to students, both in and out of the classroom, Canterbury’s program inculcates vital intellectual and ethical habits of mind. The School sees all students as individuals, encourages them as necessary, challenges them as appropriate, and inspires them to become moral leaders in a complex, secular world.

In an effort to weave a character education program into the fabric of the School, Canterbury focuses on teaching and modeling the School's five values throughout the year.

Canterbury Admissions

Canterbury School enrolls 365 students from a global pool of candidates. Each year we select students for about 120 openings from more than 600 applications. We are looking for students who have a record of academic achievement, strong character, extra-curricular involvement, community service and leadership. We enroll students from diverse backgrounds to create a rich and stimulating environment.

Of course, the best way to learn about Canterbury is to visit us in person. When you are ready, call our office to schedule a campus tour and interview. Canterbury schedules tours and interviews Monday through Saturday. Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with any questions you might have. Thanks again for taking the time to peruse our site.

Canterbury is an active participant in social media. Click here to visit the Canterbury Admission Facebook page.

Athletics at Canterbury

The philosophy and practice of the athletic program at Canterbury echoes our mission statement. Here, too, "students and faculty forge lasting bonds." Our coaches are also the students' advisors, teachers, and dorm parents. Students can participate in team sports such as soccer, football, field hockey, basketball, ice hockey, volleyball, baseball, softball, and lacrosse or in individual sports such as cross country, tennis, squash, wrestling, swimming, golf, and track and field. Crew and horseback riding are recent additions to Canterbury's sports options.

Our coaches attend clinics regularly and encourage students to attend camps over the summer. Some of our athletes have or are participating at the collegiate level in women's and men's soccer, pole vaulting, men's and women's ice hockey, football, softball, wrestling, golf, tennis, and men's and women's lacrosse. A few have gone on to become professional athletes and others are coaching at the high school and collegiate levels.

Canterbury teams compete in the Western New England Athletic Association and in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference at the Division I and II levels. Recent winning seasons and championships reflect our school spirit and the commitment of players and coaches. These include the boys' ice hockey team winning two New England Division I Championships, the girls' ice hockey team winning their own Holiday Ice Hockey Classic and the Princeton Day School Tournament, the football team winning a Class B New England Championship, the volleyball team winning a Western New England title and a wrestler winning a New England Championship and placing at the National Tournament. Such records represent a significant achievement for a school of Canterbury's size.

Canterbury in the Community

Participation in community service is an important aspect of life for many Canterbury students. Dorms, teams, and Forms are all encouraged to sponsor at least one type of community service throughout the year. The Community Service Planning Committee works with the Assistant Dean of Students to organize and coordinate the calendar of events. Canterbury encourages students to become involved in as many service projects as possible. We believe that serving others, whether it is "hands-on" or raising money, is a great way to give back to our local, national and global communities.

The Canterbury student body is very active in the larger community of New Milford and beyond. Students participate in some projects on a weekly or daily basis such as visiting the local nursing home, helping at the New Milford Children's Center or volunteering at the New Milford Hospital. Women of Canterbury conduct various drives to benefit women and children in the area. For example, they donate Easter baskets to the women's shelter in Danbury.

Throughout the year, our students also volunteer in various capacities at the local Social Service office, at Loaves and Fishes, at the Senior Center, in the Special Olympic Ski Program, and by participating in Midnight Run.

In addition we raise money for a variety of organizations, including Oxfam, the local homeless shelter, American Heart Association, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, March of Dimes, and the Connecticut Children's Hospital. Since March of 2004, Canterbury students have worked with Familia Padre Fabretto, an organization which works with the impoverished children of Nicaragua.
