In addition to its environmental delights, Washington boasts of outstanding opportunities for antique hunting, and perusing through boutiques, craft shops and quaint village stores. The attraction of The Gunn Memorial Historical Museum and The Institute for American Indian Studies as well as area art galleries, and local dining establishments that span the spectrum from sophisticated and elegant to traditional and homey, lure residents and visitors alike from near and far. Located in the heart of the Litchfield Hills, Washington is governed by a Board of Selectmen and conducts town meetings on a regular basis. The Board of Finance oversees the town’s fiscal affairs.
There are several private schools of prominence that make their home in Washington - Devereux-Glenholme School (Grades K-5), Washington Montessori School in New Preston (Grades K-8), Rumsey Hall (Grades K-9; Boarding 5-9), and The Gunnery (Grades 9-12). The public school system offers The Washington Primary School for Kindergarten through fifth grade while students in sixth through twelfth grade attend Shepaug Valley Regional Middle and High Schools (Region #12).

Overview of Commercial Area:
Washington is comprised of four separate commercial districts - New Preston, Washington Depot, Marbledale and Woodville - with 260 acres of total commercial area. One of the zones allows for light manufacturing as long as the number of employees does not exceed thirty. In Marbledale, commercial applications are granted by special permit only (i.e. public hearing and decision by a commission). All commercial zones permit no more than 25% “coverage”, which includes even unpaved walkways and parking areas. Washington’s zoning laws are designed with specific restrictions to preserve the town’s rural character.
